The first motor car was imported to Iceland in 1904. Car imports did not begin to any extent until 1913 when the first T-Ford model came to the country. Up until 1920 cars became considerably more numerous in Reykjavik and in the early twenties around 170 cars had been imported to Iceland, most of the Ford and Overland models. Among other types of cars were Maxwell, Saxon, Chevrolet and Buick.
In 1925 the use of cars had become quite common in Reykjavík with imports steadily increasing. In 1930 1434 cars had been registered in the country. Restrictions on car imports were lifted in 1960, and since that time the number of cars in Iceland has multiplied.
